Do Braces Hurt? What to Expect and How to Manage Discomfort

One of the most common questions we hear at Oasis Orthodontics is: “Do braces hurt?”

The honest answer is they can feel uncomfortable at times, especially when you first get them on or after adjustments. But the good news is that any discomfort is usually mild, temporary, and very manageable.

Let’s walk you through exactly what to expect, what we’re doing at your appointments, and how you can stay comfortable throughout your treatment.

Do Braces Hurt When You First Get Them?

When your braces are first fitted, the process itself is painless. You might feel a bit of pressure as we place the brackets and wire, but there’s no sharp pain.

However, a few hours later, your teeth may start to feel tender. This is completely normal, your teeth are beginning to respond to gentle forces that guide them into their new positions.

What you might feel:

  • General soreness or pressure
  • Sensitivity when biting or chewing
  • Mild irritation on your cheeks or lips

This usually peaks within the first 24–48 hours and settles within a few days.

Why Do Braces Feel Uncomfortable?

Braces work by applying light, continuous pressure to your teeth. This stimulates the bone around your teeth to remodel, allowing them to move safely.

That “ache” you feel is simply your body adapting to this process, it’s actually a sign your treatment is working.

What Happens at Adjustment Appointments?

At Oasis Orthodontics, your regular visits are an important part of your progress. During these appointments, we may:

Change or upgrade your wires

We replace your wire with a slightly stronger or differently shaped one to continue guiding your teeth. This helps keep your treatment progressing efficiently.

Adjust elastics or powerchains

If you’re wearing elastics or we add powerchains, these apply targeted pressure to improve your bite and close spaces.

Make small bracket or wire adjustments

Sometimes we make fine-tuned changes to ensure everything is tracking perfectly.

Will It Hurt After Adjustments?

You may feel similar discomfort to when your braces were first placed, but usually milder.

Typical experience:

  • Slight soreness for 1–3 days
  • Pressure when chewing
  • Teeth feeling “tender” to touch

This is completely normal and a sign that your teeth are continuing to move as planned.

How to Manage Braces Discomfort

The good news? There are plenty of simple ways to stay comfortable.

Stick to soft foods (especially after adjustments)

Think:

  • Soup
  • Pasta
  • Yogurt
  • Smoothies
  • Mashed vegetables

Avoid hard or crunchy foods for a couple of days while your teeth are sensitive.

Use cold relief

Cold foods and drinks can help soothe soreness. Try:

  • Ice water
  • Smoothies

Take over-the-counter pain relief (if needed)

Mild pain relief (like paracetamol) can help, just follow the recommended dosage.

Apply orthodontic wax

If brackets or wires are rubbing on your cheeks or lips, we’ll give you wax to create a smooth barrier. This is especially helpful in the early stages.

Keep up great oral hygiene

Clean teeth and healthy gums can reduce inflammation and make your overall experience more comfortable.

When Should You Be Concerned?

While some discomfort is normal, you should contact us if you experience:

  • Severe or prolonged pain
  • A poking wire that’s causing irritation
  • A loose bracket or broken appliance
